Why doesn't IIS execute the PHP code of the root index.php file of my site?

IIS literally sends the code <?php ... ?>to the browser and then executes it.

But only for the root file http://domain.com/index.php.

All other .php files in this folder and index.php files in subfolders are executed as expected.

How can I run my root index.php code?

Update: "index.php" is the default document of my website ...
