Apache POI HWPF - table output in Microsoft Word

I worked at Google for a long time and did not find a definitive answer. Is it possible to output a table using Apache POI? It seems that it was not implemented, since the main developer stopped working on it, like 5 years ago.

Is there an open source POI alternative that can do this?

I think you're right that the Apache POI is dead in the water. Obviously, it was not glamorous enough.

The only alternative that I know of is iText , which can generate RTF documents that MS Word (and any other similar application) can read. It includes full table support.
