.NET Webservices Development Approach

Question

I plan to write aka api web service for my application that was developed with .Net and SQLServer..Net provides an easy way to create web services by creating asmx files. But I need to know how best this can be developed, or what is best for creating a web service in .net or some pointers to good articles, since this is my first experience in programming web services. Eventhough SF has many references to API best practices (which are very good). I do not find much information focused on .net web services.
