Application Distribution for iPhone 2.1 vs 2.0

Question

Can iPhone apps compiled against 2.1 be successfully installed via iTunes on device 2.0?

I know that iPhone apps compiled with 2.1 can run on device 2.0 (assuming they don't use anything new from 2.1). But I'm not sure iTunes will let you install.

Does anyone have specific information about this?

I have not seen applications in the AppStore that are only 2.1+.

There were some applications that did not work 100% in 2.1, but the two firmwares were pretty much backward compatible.
