Java, unicode and fonts

I looked at the java documentation and looked at the network for information on java support for international characters with specific fonts (e.g. Monospace), but could not get a clear concrete answer.

There was a change between java 1.4 and java 1.5 / 1.6. For example, in java 1.4, if you install the font in JTextArea in Monospace, it will not be able to handle other people's characters (get rectangles instead), but in java 1.5 / 1.6 it works fine.

Are these differences / improved support clearly documented anywhere?
