How to deploy a shared SharePoint library

Question

We have a class library where we store a lot of things that we often use when developing sharepoint. How would you do that? Now the best thing is to have it in a separate solution and deploy it so that the assembly is deployed in the GAC. Thus, we guarantee that the assembly will be deployed at all levels of applications and is available.

Is there a better approach than this?

GAC is usually your best bet. Like providing deployment across all applications, it is also easier in terms of security.
