Are there online user group meetings?

I must admit that I am incredibly jealous of those developers who live next to active user groups (for example, the guys from ALT.NET in Austin). I often read blog posts and listen to podcasts that link to these private meetings and wish that I could sit and participate. But it’s just unrealistic to fly across the country to meet up with several guys for hours at a pub to talk about patterns and practices.

So I was wondering if there was a similar forum for discussion to those who do not live next to an active user group. After all, blogs and books only go this far, and for the most part are one-way communications. True, you can use comments, emails, tweets and IM for interaction, but there is something that can be said about real-time interaction in real time, which will be lost in all these environments.

I assume that what I am looking for is a kind of video conferencing transaction in which people who share an interest in a specific area of software development can come together to talk and interact without being able to live next to each other. Is there anything similar?
