VMware ESX and VMware Workstation

I use VMware Workstation 6.0 to model hard clusters of “blades” in the “chassis”. Both the host and the target OS are Linux. Each chassis uses the vmnet switch as a virtual backplane to which virtual blade servers connect. Other vmnet switches are used to identify point-to-point connections between multiple virtual ethernet adapters on each blade machine. Chassis, and therefore virtual machines, arise quite often. My scripts (python) make heavy use of the VIX api and also manage the .vmx configuration file.

What do I gain and / or lose from VMware Workstation to ESX? Can my scripts that use the VIX api work? Can my rather sophisticated virtual network topologies with a lot of vmnet switches defined as "custom" still work the same way? Is the syntax and semantics of the .vmx configuration file the same between the workstation and ESX?
