What VM technologies exist for Linux, their pros and cons, and which are recommended for which application?

W Craig Trader , User-mode Linux (UML), while - 2.6.0. , .

Ubuntu prefers KVM, and I believe that Red Hat is now moving towards it on Xen. Both KVM and Xen can be controlled using libvirt , optionally through a virtual machine manager . The virtual machine manager can manage remote instances via ssh connections.

In addition, a good comparison can be found here (pdf). Conducted many performance tests. The short version is that xen and linux-vserver were generally the best in performance.
