Question about checking svn

I am going to switch to SVN as my RCS of choice (after many years of using CVS) and ask the main question ...

I have several common projects - the code I want to use with a lot of different projects. Is it possible to “link” these shared folders with the projects they need, so checking the project will also check the shared code?

For example, suppose my repository looks like this:

root
--project1
--project2
--shared
--smtp

When I order project1, I also want to check general and smtp.

In my CVS days, I would use a Unix symbolic link in one of the project folders, but since my new SVN repository will not necessarily be located in a Unix box, I cannot do the same.

The look of SVN is what you want to do. The SVN book explains this in detail here . This is one thing I love about SVN, great documentation.

You are looking for the property "svn: externals". See this svnbook section:

In the project that you want to use the shared project, then set a property in this directory with the name "svn: externals". This property contains the name of the directory that contains the external repository, and may have some other parameters so that you always get the same revision.

Example (from svnbook, which is a GREAT link for svn questions):

$ svn propget svn:externals calc
third-party/sounds http://svn.example.com/repos/sounds
third-party/skins -r148 http://svn.example.com/skinproj
third-party/skins/toolkit -r21 http://svn.example.com/skin-maker

, / http://svn.example.com/repos/sounds. -rNNN , , , , . , , , , .

For more information on how to configure external elements, see this: http://svnbook.red-bean.com/en/1.0/ch07s03.html

Hope this helps.
