Best he-aac encoder on Linux?

I need an encoder that can convert mp3 files to he-aac (aka aac +). So far, the best of them is nero aac encoder . I have two problems: - Only one input format: wav. It is a bit slower to convert mp3 files to wav and then to a-aac. - free license for non-commercial .

Too bad ffmpeg doesn't support he-aac ... There is a commercial on2 flix solution , but it seems like a golden hammer for the simple task I need to do.

Nero AAC is the only one as far as I know. Even if FAAC supported HE-AAC, it would be useless, as its encoder is pretty badly designed and its quality is not even competitive with LAME, not to mention a good AAC encoder.

Kostya in the FFMPEG team is currently working on the AAC encoder, but he has a long way to go - he is not ready for prime time with LC-AAC, not to mention HE-AAC (he has not yet been fixed in the repository), the first step before all will be getting the ffmpeg decoder to support HE-AAC; currently it can only be decoded through FAAD.

I do not believe that on any platform there is any HE-AAC encoder with a more permissive license than Nero at the moment.
