I am involved in software development in Montreal. Over the past 3 years I have had several transitions (once a year). The first two (in the same company) were mainly sysadmin works, but I managed to make several Perl programs (mainly analyzing log files and generating statistics).
My other interaction was in IT security. I made a huge CGI Perl script to analyze the time spent by users on the Internet.
The fact is that I really want to program this, but my gateways were mostly sysadmins with some programming (due to my previous experience with Linux and UNIX).
I have another internship this winter, however I would like her to be in OO programming and SW engineering.
I have experience in administering the system, but I know OO pretty well, due to my college courses and projects (C ++, Java, VB.NET, ASP.NET, but not C #, unfortunately :().
My question is: how can I compete in an interview without experience in OO (although I build some Java, Swing, etc. projects and am learning JSP now), with other students OO experience in previous internationals?
What should be my “selling points”? I consider myself a good programmer, but my previous interviews did not materialize due to my lack of experience. In fact, I received an internship last winter in system administration, because, well ... what is my background!
