Do I need to leave spaces in a standard server rack?

We have a 42U rack, which will soon start loading new 1U and 2U servers. One of the guys here believes that you need to leave a gap between the servers (1U) to help the cooling.

The question is, right? Looking back at the data center, no one else seems to be, and it also reduces the amount that we can fit into. We use Dell 1850 and 2950 hardware.

Just NO servers and switches, and KVMs, and power supplies are not designed to be installed on a rack stacked on top of each other. I base this on several years of construction, CO and data centers for AT & T.
