Using ActiveDirectoryMembershipProvider with two domain controllers

We have an ASP.NET application running on a client site that uses ActiveDirectory to log in via ActiveDirectoryMembershipProvider. Their main domain controller, which we pointed to, went this morning, and, having received everything that needs to be done, the client wondered if we could have an excessive connection with two domain controllers; that is, specify the primary and backup AD server. A Google search turned out to be fruitless - does anyone know if this can be done?

If ActiveDirectory cannot handle multiple domain controllers, this will not be a very good technology.
