Minimalistic database administration

I am a developer. An architect on good days. Somehow, I am also the database administrator for my small company. My background is fair in DB art, but I have never been a full-fledged database administrator. My question is what do I need to do to provide a real and reasonably functional database environment with minimal actual effort?

I am sure that I need to make sure that backups are in progress and in progress. It is easy. What else should I do on an ongoing basis?
