Free or open source collaboration / e-learning software

I am looking for free data collaboration software. In particular, this concerns a non-profit organization that wants to teach remote students as a foreign language. The idea is that the teacher will teach the class, and up to 10 students will participate in the class at a time. The instructor could post slides or other training materials, and students could see them remotely on their computers. Video is not required, but sound is required. Any recommendations?

Also, if there were any reviews or feature comparisons among these products, I would be interested to hear about them.

I know that some of the developers at Carleton University developed the Blindside Project . They are actively developing an open source web conferencing and presentation tool for e-learning, with the goal of ultimately offering university courses online.
