Popping msi files

I have a product that traditionally ships as an MSI file. It is deployed via some kind of SMS-push to thousands of desktop computers by our various clients. The software we use to create these installers lasts a long time and we hope to replace it. We have already standardized InstallAnywhere for most of our products, as we support many operating systems. Unfortunately, InstallAnywhere cannot create .msi files.

I am wondering if SMS is required to use MSI files or if it can handle other types of installer (.exe). If not, are there any open source programs for creating .msi files?

If your customers use SMS, then you are in a clear ... SMS supports EXE. You enter the command line when creating the "Program", and clients probably already call msiexec to start MSI. I'm also sure that SMS precedes the MSI file :)

However, if they use Active Directory / Group Policy Objects.. then you are SOL, because it depends on the MSI format for deployment.

If you want to stick with InstallAnywhere, there are many MSI repackaging tools available. Assuming you are looking at the main application (device drivers may be a problem), then repackaging should be a pretty painless process.
