Does Microsoft Report Viewer Redistributable 2008 really require the .NET Framework 3.5?

I am building a .NET 2.0 based web application for deployment through a Windows Installer based package. Our application uses Report Viewer 2008, and I turn on the Microsoft Report Viewer Redistributable 2008 installer. When I check the download page for Report Viewer 2008 , it lists .NET 3.5 as a requirement.

Does installed .Net 3.5 really need Report Viewer 2008? We aimed at .Net 2.0 for our application, there is nothing in our code that uses the 3.0 or 3.5 Framework.

We are in the middle of testing, and everything seems to be working with 3.5, but I don’t want to miss the edge condition and throw an error for the client because it lacked the necessary runtime package.

So far, testing with the .NET Framework has been waiting. My installer has a custom version of the 2.0 Framework installed, and everything works as expected.

I am concerned that 3.5 is listed as a prerequisite on the Report Viewer download page.

Keep in mind that MSFT may require a 3.5 Framework so that they can write against it in future updates / releases, which may put your application in an unsupported state (by MSFT).
