Hyphen in custom HTML tags

Question

I want to use custom tags on my page. I have read that the custom tags must contain a hyphen: <my-element></my-element>.

What happens if I call my tags without a hyphen <myelement></myelement>:?
Will this affect search engines or other consequences?

I am sure this is not a requirement, because otherwise it does not work. Perhaps this tip is to make sure that you are not overriding the deprecated tag and are perplexed that something works the way it is not documented.
