How do charities rate the use of donated CPUs?

I saw from other questions how to measure the use of your own processor. But how does this happen in a distributed way? For instance. what if millions of computers around the world donate processor power (say) to cancer research. I have seen this a lot: often there is a table of prestigious leagues about who donated most of the processor power. For example, on tests of the Stockfish chess engine: http://tests.stockfishchess.org/tests

How is it really measured? In particular, is it easy for someone to fake how much processor power they actually donated?
