Understanding fingerprint measurement in java garbage collection

I am trying to understand java garbage collection. There are four dimensions to garbage collection: here :

  • Throughput
  • Suspense
  • Footprint
  • Efficiency

Footprint is a workflow set measured on pages and line caches. On systems with limited physical memory or in many processes, the fingerprint may dictate scalability.

I can understand the other three, but what is it Footprintand how to optimize it?
