In pycharm, escape switches me to the editor window, how do I change this?

No, at the moment you cannot easily change the behavior - unfortunately, it is hard-coded for the "Go to editor" action . There is an open discussion on this topic (since 2013): Escape

• Add the ability to bind "Go to editor" to the key, except for the exit

There are some ways to bypass certain screens to which you push Escapein - eg Terminal.
