What is the Deployment of Applications Configured on a Tomcat Instance in the IntelliJ 2017.2 Start / Debug Configuration Dialog Box?

In IntelliJ Ultimate 2017.2, in the dialog Run/Debug Configurations, with Tomcat Server> the Localitem selected on the left, what exactly does the checkbox mean Deploy applications configured in Tomcat instance? The whole purpose of this dialog is to run my application on Tomcat, so I'm confused.

I tried to access the documentation using the icon ?in the lower left corner, but got a 404 error for its URL .
