Java.lang.ClassNotFoundException: org.springframework.boot.SpringApplication with maven-jar-plugin

Question

I am new to Spring and Maven. I try to start a simple application jar, but I get the following error:

java -jar target/gs-rest-service-0.0.1-SNAPSHOT.jar 
Exception in thread "main" java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError: org/springframework/boot/SpringApplication

I also see that org.springframework.boot.SpringApplication is where it should be, inside the Maven Dependencies library. Therefore, I am not entirely sure what is happening, what causes this error.
