What I cannot understand, and I hope someone can clarify, is how to store data if it should be relational.

What useful or relevant data is not relational?
You will never have, say users, perhaps addresses, the end of the story.

Take a look at any application. Look at Zillow. houseshave one address. But they are also in school_districts, which contains many others houses. Now it is relational.
I have never seen an application in which associations in a data model are accessible. Or it did not have any objects that were to be associated with several other objects.
What type of data is this?
