Android camera preview and background service

If I run an image processing application on Android, what would be better in terms of memory / processor usage and heating problems?

  • Launch the camera with a preview.
  • Launch the camera in the background. This says that background maintenance takes up a lot of memory (I'm used to thinking the other way around).

I ask this because I want to run the application 24/7, but I'm not sure which approach would be better for my purpose. I tested the camera app with a preview and it stopped due to heat after 1 week.

Thank.
