Setuptools extension extension for using CMake in setup.py?

I am writing a Python extension that links the C ++ library, and I use cmake to help with the build process. This means that right now, the only way I know how to link it, I must compile them with cmake first before I can run setup.py bdist_wheel. There must be a better way.

I was wondering if it is possible (or someone tried) to invoke CMake as part of the setup.py ext_modules build process? I suppose there is a way to subclass something, but I'm not sure where to look.

I use CMake because it gives me much more options for creating c and C ++ library extensions with complex assembly lines, just like me. In addition, I can easily create Python extensions directly from cmake using the PYTHON_ADD_MODULE () command in findPythonLibs.cmake. I just want it to be just one step away.
