Perl integer arithmetic giving a floating point answer

The following code mimics the actual production code. double quotes are used because the actual data comes from an XML file, parsed with XML:Twig:

It gives the following result:

When run on my laptop and on our production server. (above from my laptop) However, when I run it on another production machine, it works fine. use integer;in the above code makes it work. But I can not do this with production code (easy). So, I would like to know ...

  • Why is this happening.
  • Which compiler is missing in the perl interpreter that would fix it.
