Why is compiling AOT not the default way to create Angular2 applications?

When performance improvements, package size improvements, and tree shake benefits are important for not-so-complex AOT applications, why is AOT not recommended for creating and deploying angular applications?

There are several discussions about their limitations when the size of the application is huge, but not so convincing as not to use it by default.
