Question

It might be a duplicate, and I apologize if that is the case, but I really want a definitive answer, as that seems to vary depending on where I look.

Is it permissible to say that a gigabyte is 1024 megabytes or should it be said that it is 1000 megabytes? I take computer science on the GCSE, and a typical exam question might be the number of bytes per kilobyte, and I believe that the AQA examination board has an answer to a question like 1024 is not 1000. How is it? Are they right? Which should I go with?
