Dependence in Maven: what is an effect like ejb?

If you declare a dependency in Maven, you can add a type like war, jar, ejb.

I understand that compiling a project with an ejb type is different from compiling a project with a jar type, since it starts a different life cycle.

But what is the difference in declaring a dependency?

The Maven ejb vs jar dependency type seems to be asking the same question, but the accepted answer seems strange to me. I doubt the type of addiction can cause a life cycle. Actually, I would expect the ejb type and jar type to do the same. Can anyone shed some light on this?
