Pip after updating pip & scrapy "pip install --upgrade"

Using debian 8 (jessie) amd64 with python 2.7.9. I tried the following commands:

pip install --upgrade pip

pip install --upgrade scrapy

after that, I get the following pip error

googled for several similar problems, cffi or cryptography can cause this problem, but I cannot find a clear way to fix it.

The exact same mistake today, but in a different situation. I suspect this is due to the module cryptography.

Which helped me in installing a specific version of the package cffi:

pip install cffi==1.7.0

i removed cffi and tried this command to install cffi 1.7.0:

pip install cffi==1.7.0
