Index on ts field in oplog.rs not updated

Question

I have an application that reads the oplog.rs collection in a mongodb 2.2 replica by querying in the ts field.

I added an index to the ts field, but it does not update when inserting new entries into oplog.

What am I missing? I cannot find anything in mongodb docs that indexes on private collections are not supported (rather the opposite), and I cannot find any information that oplog is special.
