What is the use of WEBVTT (.vtt) over SubReal (.srt)?

Question

Finally, I came to the conclusion that google-chrome does not support .srt because WEBVTT is an HTML5 standard .

Now I wonder what is the reason for this decision.

It seems that google-chrome may have supported .srt because:

• .srt is widely used
• .srt and .vtt almost do not differ.

Is there something better in WEBVTT that makes .srt obsolete?

People probably just love to reinvent the wheel.

The only difference I see is that vtt supports positioning subtitles on the screen.
