Can I install Beeline to run hold requests without installing the Hive?

I am on a Mac OSX machine and I would like to run queries against hadoop db on a CentOS 6.6 machine. I can log in to CentOS and run hive requests there. But I need to be able to run queries from my machine to troubleshoot connectivity issues.

Is there any way to install Beeline (newer version of Hive CLI) or Hive on OSX without installing / configuring Hadoop? The information I saw suggests that you need to install Hadoop first, which seems redundant to check if the remote database is listening on the connection.
