How to install libraries without linker in drupal 8

In drupal 8, I come across modules that require libraries to be installed by Composer. However, I was wondering if I could skip part of the composer and just install the libraries manually.

Will I ever be able to do this?

(I never got Composer to work)

Just take the library to /libraries.

For colorbox you must have root/libraries/colorbox/jquery.colorbox-min.js

But in this way you will miss the main goal of the composer, because it is impossible to automatically update the entire dependency.
