Using strings and byte-like objects compatible in code to run in both Python 2 and 3

I am trying to change the code shown below that works in Python 2.7.x, so it will also work without changes in Python 3.x. However, I ran into the following problem, which I cannot solve in the first function bin_to_float(), as shown below:

float_to_bin(0.000000): '0'
Traceback (most recent call last):

TypeError: a bytes-like object is required, not 'str'

I tried to fix this by adding bf = bytes(bf)right before the call struct.unpack(), but at the same time I created my own TypeError:

TypeError: string argument without an encoding

So my questions are: is it possible to fix this problem and achieve my goal? And if so, how? Preferably in a way that will work in both versions of Python.

Note that I'm not sure if this works with all versions of Python 3. I remember that pseudocoding was not supported in some version 3.x, but I don’t remember the details. I tested the code using Python 3.5.
