Mail: Invalid header when sending email application using Ubuntu

This exact question was sent by user 'anvd' on July 29th, but then deleted - I found it in the Google Cached version ...!

I suppose the fix was something obvious, but it would be great if it had not been removed.

I try this command to send an email with an attachment.

echo 'These are contents of my daily backup' | mail -s 'Daily backup' -a /tmp/filename.gz mymail@hotmail.com

Error: mail: invalid header: /tmp/filename.gz

Email is sent, but the application is not attached.

This worked and still works on other systems, but not sure what has changed on one of my machines ...
