Messenger does not display images in a Generic template in a mobile application

Question

I am sending Facebook a structured message with the URL of the image file (the file is in Amazon S3). The message is structured in accordance with https://developers.facebook.com/docs/messenger-platform/send-api-reference/generic-template (common template).

The message is received and displayed just fine - but the image does not appear in the iOS Messenger mobile app (I have not tested Android). It appears in the web version of Messenger.

Does anyone know what might cause this?
