Is there MariaDB or MySQL in XAMPP?

Question

I downloaded and installed XAMPP 5.6.15 for Windows .

When I click "what is included?" he says he comes with MariaDB 10.1.9. But there is a folder in the root directory mysql, but not mariadb.

Also when doing:

echo $_SERVER["MYSQL_HOME"];

I get:

\xampp\mysql\bin

So, I assume that it still comes with MySQL instead of MariaDB?

MariaDB is a replacement for MySQL, so you will see several folders with mysqlas name, but MariaDB behind it. See https://mariadb.com/kb/en/mariadb/mariadb-vs-mysql-compatibility/ as well ...
