What is the difference between the target processor and platform in Visual Studio 2013?

In VS 2013, in the section “Compile in project properties”, I see two configurations that, apparently, refer to the same thing (print window on the right). Platform and target processor.

By default, Platform strings are the same as whole CPU or Mixed. However, since the Platform is a user-configurable string, you can give them any name or separate them from the target CPU.

I would not recommend untying them, as this can be very confusing.
