Is Surface 2.0 SDK used?

I am trying to create an application that will be used on the MS Surface tablet, and tried to create a Surface project on VS 2015. When I found that the Surface project is not part of the installed templates in VS 2015, I tried to download the SDK to find out what is for it VS 2010 is required for use. Having noticed this, I begin to think that the Surface 2.0 SDK is no longer in use, but I wanted to make sure before starting to look for an alternative. If so, what other types of templates can I use to create applications for the MS Surface tablet?

At the moment, it would be wiser to just write a universal Windows application if you plan to use a Windows 8 tablet. This is available in Visual Studio 2015.

It is very confusing for Microsoft to do this, but the large multi-user desktop devices that used to be called Surface are now called PixelSense, and the name Surface now refers to the line of laptop computers with a touch screen. This technologist is trying to explain this.

I have spent a lot of time on this confusion and hope to save others.
