Index size larger in wiredTiger compared to mmap

I was just evaluating MongoDB. For testing purposes, I entered 500 documents into the mongoDB collection with the wiredTiger storage engine and others with mmap.

When querying statistics, the index size is _id_larger in wiredTiger compared to mmap. The total size of the document is smaller in the wire tiger due to compression.

Why is index size larger in wiredTiger?

Mongo verion 3.0 installed on Windows 7
