"Unable to insert object" Error while pasting PDF files / objects in Microsoft Excel

I am currently using microsoft excel 2010. Trying to insert some PDF files into a spreadsheet.

I entered the tab "Insert tab" → "Object" → select "Adobe Document" (the "Display as icon" checkbox is checked) from the list → Go to the "Create from file" tab → Select a pdf file from my computer (checked display as an icon) → click OK. Then the following error appears in the dialog box: "Unable to insert object."

Other objects (such as other characters and words) and Pictures can be inserted without problems.

I tried the following and nothing helped:

  • Reopen Excel spreadsheet
  • Delete the MSForms.exd file from any Tempsubfolder in your user profile
  • Uninstall all MS Office updates.
  • Delete all files with .exd

In the end, I figured out how to solve this problem with PDF embedding in excel: select the package instead.

Go to the “Insert” tab → “Object” → double-click “Package” in the list of options → the “Create Package” dialog box appears, where it guides you through the attachment process!

It even allows you to rename the attachment file name.

Hope this helps.

This usually happens because you are still opening the pdf file. Make sure the pdf file you tried to insert is closed.

, , .

For example, if you want to insert a .doc file. In the task manager, the "Microsoft word" application is closed under the processes. It will work and allow you to insert the .doc file.
