How to emphasize (rather than highlight) the current line in vim?

I consider it possible to get underline under the current line, rather than highlight.

This adds highlight in my .vimrc:

set cursorline

This is what I tried to add to get the underline:

:highlight CursorLine gui=underline cterm=underline

But it does not matter.

I am using vim 7.4.629 on Centos 6.7 via putty if this helps.

try to :hi clear CursorLineclear the current cusorline hl then:hi CursorLine gui=underline cterm=underline

The underline color matches the color ctermfgor guifg. You can either live with your "colorful" underline, or add cterm/guifgto emphasize text and underline the same color.

:set cursorline

was the best solution for me, you can combine it with deleting the cursor as indicated in the answer above
