Python string replacement efficiency

I have a list of ~ 50,000 lines (captions) and a list of 150 words to remove from these headers if found. My code is still below. The end result should be a list of 50,000 lines, with all copies of 150 words deleted. I would like to know the most efficient (effective) way to do this. My code seems to work, albeit very slowly.

Most of the regular expression service resources are compiled by regular expressions. You must move the regex compilation from the loop.

This should give you a significant improvement:

pattern1 = re.compile('[^0-9a-zA-Z]+')
pattern2 = re.compile('\s+')
for k in range(len(titles)):

    s = re.sub(pattern1,' ',titles[k])
