How to get install.wim from a Windows 10 pro installation file

I am currently studying the deployment of Windows 10. I have installed the Microsoft Deployment 2013 update 1 toolkit update. When I try to import the operating system, the system will report that I cannot find install.wim in the Windows sources. I did some research, it turned out that the current Windows 10 home / pro installation media comes with install.esd instead of install.wim. Does anyone know to extract install.wim from install.esd. I looked through several methods on the Internet, none of them work.

You can easily convert install.esd to install.wim using ESD2WIM-WIM2ESD.cmd

  • Run it as Administrator
  • Enter the location of install.esd
  • Type 1 and it will start the conversion
  • Once this is done, you should see the completed install.wim file in the same directory in which this cmd utility is located.

You can get a .wim file from any medium other than downloading the Media Creation Tool (or Windows Update). You can also use the Media Creation Tool installation media in a virtual machine, and then Sysprep and capture from that virtual machine.

Media downloaded from MSDN or VLSC will contain WIM and there will be no problems with MDT.
