Set background elastic scroll background in Chrome on OSX?

Question

I have an arrangement of two columns with a dark sidebar and a backlit background background.

Chrome OSX (and other OSX browsers) have an elastic effect when the user scrolls over the top of the page, but the background of the overflow area is white.

With the exception of re-implementing elastic scrolling, is there anything I can do to get both the side and main column to expire from the edge during elastic scrolling?

I tried adding the background linear-gradientto the tags htmland body, but this does not work.
