I am looking for functionality in which when a user receives a message, say, through a WhatsApp application containing a link starting with a specific scheme (prefix), my application will be called when the user clicks on this link.
I understand that this feature is already available as "custom URL schemes", but I also noticed that Universal Links has something similar. So, is there a problem with "custom URL schemes"? I do not want to use Universal Links because I do not want my application to be limited to iOS 9.
In addition, it looks like Android also has this feature of the client URL, but again, on the latest Android version 6.0, it is mentioned here that they have an “App Links” feature that only works on Android 6.0. So again, what is the difference between the two?
I don’t want to restrict the work of my application only on iOS9 or Android 9. Therefore, I believe that the traditional "custom URL schemes" are more attractive to me at the moment.
I also want to make sure that "custom URL schemes" will work when the user clicks on a link in WhatsApp, or will only work if there is a link in a web browser or by mail.
