How do you define a language that is not compiled

I ask this question because I see a lot of “personal preferences” when it comes to the terms “Scripting Language” and “Programming Language”.

My question is:

Is there a suitable technical term for a language that does not compile or works directly in the browser? Each article I read and the question that I looked through here do not directly say what determines this characteristic of the language.
